# Seven checkout details that cost you orders

Checkout is the one part of your site where every second of friction costs money directly. Here are seven places it happens.

## 1. Forced registration.

Asking for an account before the purchase asks for commitment before you have delivered anything. Offer guest checkout first, and the account once the order is confirmed.

## 2. Costs revealed at the end.

Shipping that appears on the last step is the most common reason people abandon. Show the total as early as you can, even when it is higher than you would like.

## 3. Many steps, no sense of progress.

People need to know where they are and what is left. A clear step indicator costs a few lines of code.

## 4. Forms that don’t forgive.

Validation as people type, autofill that works, a postcode that fills in the town, card fields that accept spaces. Each one removes a reason to leave.

## 5. Too few ways to pay, or far too many.

In the Greek market, cash on delivery and instalments still decide sales. Twelve payment logos, on the other hand, leave people stuck. Keep the four that cover 95% of payments.

## 6. No answer to “why buy here?”

Returns policy, delivery time, a phone number: small, discreet and visible inside checkout. Each one takes a risk off the buyer.

## 7. Mobile that only half works.

Test your own checkout on 4G, one-handed, in sunlight. If you need to zoom, you are losing orders.

Before you buy more traffic, measure what your current checkout costs you. It is the cheapest improvement you will ever make.
