# What a slow eshop really costs you

Page speed decides, in the first seconds, whether a visitor stays in your shop or leaves. Here is what each second costs, and what fixes it.

## The first seconds decide everything.

53% of visitors leave a site that takes longer than 3 seconds to load (Google/SOASTA Research, 2017). Every extra second adds to the people who leave.

## Conversion drops before you notice.

A one-second delay can cut conversion by up to 7% (Neil Patel). For a shop with 500 orders a month and an average order of €50, that comes to:

- 35 fewer orders a month
- about €1,750 less revenue a month
- €21,000 less revenue a year

## The basket empties at checkout.

Slow loading at checkout raises the risk of an abandoned basket by 57% (Baymard Institute). The order only completes when checkout is fast and dependable.

## What fixes it.

The fixes that pay first are usually the simplest:

- Optimised images and code (CSS and JavaScript)
- A content delivery network (CDN) for static files
- [Hosting that scales](https://www.easyadmin.gr/en/hosting), with load balancers and a tuned database for peak periods

## The efantasy.gr example.

[efantasy.gr](https://www.easyadmin.gr/en/case-studies/efantasy), one of the largest Greek eshops, runs on scalable hosting with two load balancers and two VPS. That setup has kept the site stable through sales and holidays, with minimal downtime.

Research into Amazon’s scale found that one extra second of load time could cost it $1.6 billion a year in lost sales (Fast Company). The proportion holds at every size.
